Day 6 – Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life

Day 6 I prayed the prayer 1 Chronicles 4:10“ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

It was a fairly uneventful day. My eyes are almost better. I worked on the household budget and did some rearranging in the basement. Both girls were home for supper and we spent some family time carving a jack-o-lantern.

I connected with a few special people through text. A very ordinary day at home. And best of all I got to miss out on the chaos of Halloween at school.

I thought after six days of praying for blessing this would get easier. But asking for God to bless me still seems unnatural and I am still not sure what I am looking for. I do, however, feel a shift in my heart towards those I would have previously judged.

These words struck a chord in my heart this week. True compassion demands action. Am I ready to pay the price for caring?

Day 5 Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life

Day 5 I prayed the prayer 1 Chronicles 4:10“ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

Well, I’m not drowning in money yet. In fact, I received an unexpected bill. I had a little more sleep than usual to rest my eyes. Then I got busy and cleaned my closet. Now I have two big bags of clothes to share with others and mornings will go smoother because I know where my clothes are.My eyes are getting better although still quite red around the edges.

My daughter came home and can now move her hand. Even more amazing she reported that she is enjoying her grade twelve year. She hasn’t said school and like in the same sentence since Kindergarten. She is making new friends and appears to be happy. Also, she has secured a job for after graduation. She will continue as a swimming instructor at the local pool hanging out all day with the friends she has made there.

When she came home she turned on the laptop because she didn’t know it had froze on me and it worked. Wonderful!

My college daughter came home early enough to eat supper together. She is making a few friends at college as well. She sat at the table and did her assignment. I love to watch her work. It gives me a glimpse of how creative God is.

I mopped up the water from the leaking dishwasher and now have to go unplug the bathroom sink. No we are not millionaires, but we are wonderfully blessed serving an extraordinary God on an ordinary day.

Are you experiencing the riches of God? Why not leave a comment?

Day 4 – Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life

Day 4 I prayed the prayer 1 Chronicles 4:10“ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

My eye was still red when I woke up. I’m beginning to get a little concerned, but I have had trouble with my eyes all my life so this isn’t unusual. The kids are having great fun having a zombie for a teacher. By noon I have to take my contacts out because now both eyes are red. I can’t see very well with my glasses but I have no choice but to wear them. Now I can’t drive home so my daughter has to come and drive the car home. As I do my usual walk, I pray fervently that God will use this set back to show His power. I go home and put cold teabags on my eyes to sooth them. I know God will heal me.

When I look in the mirror 30 minutes later, both eyes are completely red. There is no white showing. I look like quite freaky. When my daughter comes home from work, she has an injured her hand. So off to the emergency room we go. After two hours of sitting in the waiting room visiting with a former grade 2 student and her daughter. Does that make me a grandteacher? Anyways final diagnosis, my daughter has a badly sprained wrist and I have a bacterial infection in my eyes. I get a doctor’s note to stay away from work for two days. In 32 years of teaching, I have left work to take care of the girls but have only taken a handful of days for me. I don’t even know how to fill out the sick day form properly. So I get to miss the day of the year I hate the most – Halloween at school.

Now my laptop has decided it doesn’t want to be a part of my day. It is completely frozen.

Is this what Jabez was praying for when he asked God to bless him and keep him from all evil and disaster? I thought I was praying for comfort. What is your experience praying the prayer of Jabez after 4 days? Leave your comments and share your experiences.

Day 3 – Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life

Day 3- I prayed the prayer 1 Chronicles 4:10“ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

To be honest, I thought today God would bless me financially. It was an ordinary day. After having a headache all day yesterday, I woke up with a red eye. My students said I looked like I had zombie eyes. I told them I was getting ready for Halloween. They thought I was really cool.

I looked forward to getting the mail, because I was so sure when I prayed “God would you wonderfully bless me”, He would send me a big cheque. But there was no big cheque in the mail. I did, however, pay all my monthly bills.

I went to a financial education course in the evening. The knowledge I received will help me become a better steward of what God has given me.

When I got home, I spent some time just chilling’ with my two daughters. Life has been very busy this fall so we don’t get a lot of time to just enjoy each other. I would say I am wonderfully blessed but I feel God wants to show Himself in an even more powerful way.

Day 2 – Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life

Day 2- I prayed the prayer 1 Chronicles 4:10“ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

I woke up with a small headache. But I thought as I got moving it would disappear. However, that little headache hung on all day. I eventually took a pain killer and then I was so tired I almost fell asleep in my staff meeting. I finally got home at the end of the day and had a little rest. Then it was time to take care of my household. I went grocery shopping, ate some supper and taxied the girls home. While I ate my supper I listened to a message on the power of Jesus. He doesn’t want to make me a better me. He wants me to become like Him.

I had to admit I was disappointed in how my day turned out. I thought if I prayed for blessing. I would have a fabulous day. It was very ordinary and I couldn’t keep ahead of my headache.

Just before I went to sleep, I listened to a message about the Atheist Christian. That really struck a chord in my heart. I want to be like Jesus in my heart, but I am really willing to live in His power? It costs Jesus His life. Do I really want that radical of a christianity? I am blessed by the challenges of great people who are willing to speak the truth.

How was your first day of blessing? If you haven’t started the challenge yet, start today. Invite a friend. I know God is going to lead us into His purpose. Have a blessed day. Feel free to leave a comment.

Day 1 Update

1 Chronicles 4:10

The service at church was celebrating the gifts of the Spirit. It was an experience of hearing people prophesy, watching people receive miracles of healing and empowerment. Then I had the privilege of having lunch with three of my favourite people. It was a time of encouragement and laughter. After a tasty lunch, we went to see the movie, Woodlawn. An inspirational movie of the power of love and belief in a God in spite of racism. The last part of the evening was spent regrouping and organizing for the week. I can’t wait to see how God will move today. How was your day? Please share in the comments below.

Day 1 -Prayer of Jabez

Ordinary day with an extraordinary God

Day 1 – I pray “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil.” 1 Chronicles 4:10.

An ordinary day with an extraordinary God. Let’s meet together and share how God is moving in our hearts

Prayer of Jabez

Want a bigger vision for your life.

As I journey on the path of life, I read or listen to my Bible on a regular basis. I quite enjoy the drama of the Old Testament and I am inspired by the miracles and transformations in the New Testament. When it comes to a few books of lineage like Chronicles, I tend to read it blah. blah. blah. It really is quite boring reading the sons of …. the sons of…. the sons of……. I can’t even write about it because it is puts me to sleep.

While I was skipping chapters of the Bible, I was missing two verses hidden in I Chronicles 4:9-10.In 2000,Bruce Wilkinson published a little book called The Prayer of Jabez on these two verses.

The verses read like this: Jabez was more distinguished than any of his brothers. His mother named him Jabez because she had such a hard time at his birth (Jabez means Distress). He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “ Oh that you would wonderfully bless me and help me in my work, please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all evil and disaster!” And God granted him his request. (That is the wording from the Life Application Bible)

In his book, Wilkinson introduces the concept of gimper. The definition of a gimper is:Someone who always does a little more than what’s required or expected.Someone who hates mediocrity, an overachiever, always doing his/her best in everything, is not satisfied with “it’s okay”; it has to be “it’s great!” He can never settle for anything less than what’s best for him because of the gimper in him. Gimpers never quit.

He challenges his reader to make the Jabez prayer for blessing a part of the daily fabric of your life. He encourages his reader to pray the prayer of Jabez every day for thirty days in a row.

I am a believer in the power of prayer. But I have to admit asking for God to bless me seems unnatural. So the first time I prayed this I was just reciting words and didn’t really pay attention to the fact that I was asking the Creator of Heaven and Earth to bless me. Secretly, I was hoping to win the lottery. But I also tied my prayer to how unworthy I felt.

All of the stories on my blog are about how I see God move in my heart. Since I started praying this prayer I have realized that God blesses me to bless others. I love the feeling of being empowered and prayer helps me to shift my powerless to an all powerful God. I hate missing out on things.and prayer helps me to grab on to God’s promises. and I don’t want to miss out on any of His promises to me. My prayers can write my story and change my future and those around me. Everyday I hear people complaining about situations in their lives, we are made for more than the life we are living.

When was the last time God worked through you in such a way the you knew beyond a doubt that God had done it? Want a bigger vision for your life.

I often miss out on how God works. I think blessing means monetary gain but God wants to change my heart towards my fellow travellers. Looking back over my life, I can see how God changed my heart and everything else was added as needed. I am ready to take the challenge of praying the Jabez prayer for 30 days. Will you journey with me? I will blog on a daily basis of how God is moving. I have heard God moves slowly. That is not my experience. God moves quickly when we invite Him to. In the comments below share how God is blessing you and let’s walk this journey together. Why don’t you invite some friends and let’s make it a celebration. Let’s get to know each other while we watch God move.
